[mnet-devel] about Mnet for Mac

Dear Mac-Crypto Folks:

Something I really like to avoid is people hearing about Mnet, trying it, and
being disappointed.

Therefore I hasten to tell you the following caveats about Mnet v0.6.2, which
was recently ported to Mac:

1. There is a known bug in, of all things, the crypto layer. Since that code
hasn't been changed in many months, it is very likely a problem in a
different layer, for example if the transport layer is dropping some bytes
and thus giving misaligned data to the crypto layer for it to decode.

This bug is *not* specific to Mac and we are working on it as the top-
priority bug. You can see the current status of all bugs on the issue
tracker. Set "Group" to "v0.6.2" and make sure "Status" is set to "Open":

    http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=43482&atid=436453

2. The current process of installing and launching the app includes that the
user has to install Python and wxPython themselves, download the Mnet
tarball, then get a shell and launch "Mnet.sh" on the command-line. One
of our number has already made some experimental GUI packages that don't
require any command-line anything, but he isn't satisfied with them yet.

3. The wxWindows-based GUI has some noticeable slowness and other problems on
my G4 laptop. These aren't critical problems, so I'm ignoring them for
now in the hopes that OSAF's sponsorship of Robin Dunn will result in an
    improvement to wxWindows/MacOSX.

Thanks for your attention.

Zooko
