[mnet-devel] Radical suggestion: rollback

One question that I noticed in the older irc logs was someone asking
why we were interested in a particular version of mnet_new that
predated some of the more recent changes. The answer is that we wanted
stability and wanted to work on a version that had both the code re-org
and the new FEC encoding format, but we were wary of some of the other
changes and feared that they might break things. This turned out to be
correct.
I would like to propose creating an actual -STABLE branch in 0.7 that
works. It doesn't have to work well, but having a non-functional head
is simply killing Mnet. What do I think should be in this branch? I
would suggest the re-organized mnet_new code structure, the ZNFF
encoding/storage format, and Tschechow's blockstores. Everything else
that has been in progress or under development does not solve a current
problem and inclusion at this time seems to create even more problems.
Getting a running, operational stable branch is critical for the next
couple of weeks. It doesn't have to be pretty, but it can serve as a
point from which new things can be slowly and carefully added.
Any objections or other suggestions on returning to a -STABLE path?
Jim
