By the way, using oprofile, and asking the performance gurus on #oprofile for 
advice, I've figured out something that will *probably* accelerate fec 
encoding significantly -- perhaps by a factor of two or even more.

However, there is a tradeoff -- the trick would involve generating all the 
shares in parallel rather than in sequence, which would mean we would have to 
store them on disk while generating but before publication has completed.

Also, of course, I may have misunderstood how the algorithm works so this 
trick wouldn't help.
